The birthday girl can't make her own party, so we'll just have to eat all the cake without her.
We're also pushing the start time to an hour earlier. Sledding will start at 5pm. Pizza will arrive at 6pm. We'll be done at 7pm. (Friday, 2/6)
Friends and family are welcome to attend.
Sledding/Birthday Pizza Party
Written by Josh Seamon
Friday, 23 January 2009
Everyone has now been scheduled for a time slot for scheduling on 2/5. The schedule is online right here.
We are going to have a sledding/birthday pizza party on Friday, 2/6 from 5 to 7pm at my apartment. We'll be sledding on the hill across the street from my apartment, eating dinner, and consuming some birthday cake in celebration of Molly's birthday.
Parents and friends are welcome to attend as long as they are up for sledding. Everyone needs to bring sledding gear. I'll be collecting money ($8 per student) during 2/5's scheduling meeting to cover the cost of pizza.

Scheduling Day Meetings
Written by Josh Seamon
Wednesday, 17 December 2008
This was just emailed out to my advisory:
Dear Parents,
On February 5, the Academy will have a half day of school so that teachers may spend the rest of the day meeting with their advisees' parents. The purpose of those meetings is to have final discussions and to reach agreements regarding next year's schedules. I will be available starting at 1pm and I plan to remain available long enough to accommodate everyone's schedules. My co-advisor, Crystal Meunier, will also be available. At this point in time, I'm assuming she and I will meet with you together, but it's possible that she and I might be able to split and thus host more than one meeting at a time, if that works for you.
We have a wonderful advisory with fantastic kids. That will make it all the nicer to meet with you to help them plan for their futures.
Please reply to this email at your earliest convenience with the following information:
1) Proposed meeting time on 2/5 (half-our increments starting at 1pm)
OR
2) Alternate date and time (after school) if 2/5 does not work for you.
Slots will be filled on a first come first serve basis.
Have a great holiday season!

Winter Advisory Potluck '07
Written by Josh Seamon
Thursday, 20 December 2007
Pictures from tonight's
festivities are online right
here.
The sleds are gone and the snow on the carpet is melting....
Tonight was the second advisory potluck of the year. After
carbo-loading on lots of pasta and potatoes, with a healthy dose of ice
cream mixed in, the kids and I geared up and headed out to the hill
across the road from my apartment. With today's added snow coverage,
there was some serious snow to plow through, but that made it so much
more fun. With the help of some traditional plastic sledding equipment,
the kids made many runs down the hill, helped by a good dose of Mr.
Seamon giving them a big push ;) Jasmine the golden also had a fun time
running into the path of sledders. (Sidenote: Where I come from
sledding is sledding and snowmobiling is snowmobiling.). After about 30
minutes of romping around in the snow, Mr. Lyon started losing feeling
in his feet, so we decided it was time to head in.
Inside we joined the parents who had stayed nice and warm the whole
time. We gathered up with our Yankee Swap presents and the second round
of fun began. Lots of candy, chocolate, and fun toys were passed
around. After one last round of desserts everyone packer up and headed
out.
Have a great holiday everyone!

Riverbend Diner and Potluck

Riverbend Diner
Riverbend Diner, 10/11/07
This morning 6 of my advisees plus one older brother and I took off for
breakfast at the Riverbend Diner. We had a nice short drive up rt. 5
and everyone managed to behave themselves in the diner -- Well, pretty
much anyway :) Lots of pancakes, waffles, home fries, bacon, sausage,
eggs, hot chocolate, and juice later, we were back on campus with
plenty of time to spare. Pictures from our little trip are online right
here.
Next up...
There will be an advisory potluck on Thursday, December 20th from 6 to
8pm at my apartment. Everyone should plan on bringing a
dinner or dessert item. We should have lots of snow by then so the plan
will be to sled on the hill infront of my apartment. Make sure you
bring lots of snow gear and sleds.
In addition to eating and sledding (I guess native Vermonter's call is
sliding?), we're going to run a Yankee Swap. If you don't know what
that is, read this
document (PDF). Everyone needs to bring a wrapped gift for
everyone who is going to participate in the swap. More than one person
per family can participate. The more people we have involved the
better! You absolutely don't need to spend money on your gift. If you
do, spend at most $5.
You are encouraged to make your own gift. It can be random, funny,
creative -- anything you want as long as it's appropriate.
There is a chance we might have another out-of-school advisory activity
before the potluck. At the moment I'm not set on anyone idea, so if
anyone out there has a great idea for something we should do, please
email it over to me. Ideas we discussed this morning include:
- A day trip to Burlington -- maybe go to the Higher Ground for a
concert?
- Go to the huge arcade in NH
- A ski trip to Jay or Burke
- A dinner trip somewhere neat -- P&H maybe?
If anyone would like to host an advisory event at their house that
would be fantastic. If you're interested in hosting such an event, let
me know.

Advisory Trip to MA - 9/21-23/07

Advisory Trip to MA - 9/21-23/07
Advisory Trip to Western, MA
All of the pictures I
took this weekend are online right
here.
And here's the writeup of what we did this weekend...
Right after conference period
ended I walked out behind Streeter and
picked up out bus. I then drove it over to Brantview drive where most
of the kids were already there waiting for me. (Points for them!).
After loading up the bus and waiting for a few kids to collect some
items they forgot, we pushed off from campus around 3:45 and after
gassing up the bus and picking up some items that I had forgotten at my
apartment we were heading south on 91 by 4pm.
The weather was gorgeous and of course there was no traffic on 91, so
the drive was very smooth. With Adrienne sitting behind me who gladly
let me try and speak Chinese to him, the drive went very fast. We made
a brief stop in Putney and then crossed over into MA, and 30 minutes
later at 7pm we drive up the driveway to The Farm in Leverett.
After unpacking the bus we walked around The Farm checking in with the
various groups of animals. We saw the kennel of dogs in the barn along
with our four horses. We also spent some time making baby sounds at the
6 Bernese Mountain Dog puppies. Next we played some basketball with my
brother Caleb and then came inside. My father then finished cooking
dinner and everyone lined up in the kitchen for salad, garlic mashed
potatoes, and lemon ginger chicken. We took our plates outside to the
front yard where we devoured our food and then came inside and gathered
in the living room to watch Zoolander. About a half hour into the movie
we took a break to intake about 3 gallons of ice cream. We then
finished the movie and everyone migrated to their sleeping positions
upstairs.
The next morning we all woke up
at 8am and had a very nice bagels and
party breakfast. We then made our own sandwiches and at 9 we loaded
onto the bus and drove for 5 minutes to the Leverett Peach Pagoda, a
large grand Buddhist center on top of a small mountain. The weather was
again perfect so everything looked great. We walked around the
picturesque pond next to the temple and looked at all the gold statues
around the base of the white dome. The kids took particular interest in
the frogs in the pond and then we headed back down to the parking lot
and headed out.
20 minutes later we were at the Hadley Mini-Golf center on rt. 9
between Amherst and Northampton. We collected our clubs and then
started playing in two groups. Adrienne managed a hole-in-one on his
first stroke, and a few other kids had their own through the day, but
hole-in-ones proved to be rare. The kids did battle with some rock/sand
traps, rather tough shots, and each other’s taunting. 18
holes later Matt emerged #1 with a score of 47…. and Caleb
finished second with a score of 48!
We got back on rt. 9 and headed west towards Northampton. On the way
there I decided to stop at Exotic Fish and Pet, a very fun pet store.
We saw some great fish, strange lizards, and a very talkative parrot.
We also got a chance to lots of miniatures and card in the game store
next door before getting back on rt. 9.
We next drove through downtown
Northampton (NoHo) and noticed at how
similar it was to Church St. in Burlington. We then parked on the edge
of the Smith campus and started walking to the Botanic Gardens. About
half way there we noticed a sports game going on on their athletics
fields so we made a small detour to see what was going on. After being
way-laid a bit by a Smith student and her rather ‘too
honest’ pitch for coming to Smith, we made it over to the
athletic fields to find field hockey and rugby games going on
simultaneously right next to each other. We managed to catch the tail
end the rugby game and some of the field hockey game before we headed
over to the gardens. The gardens are kept in a very large expanse of
greenhouses. We walked through all of the rooms and saw an immense
amount of greenery in such a dense setting it really felt like a rain
forest. Next we walked back to the bus, picked up our sandwiches, and
had a small picnic lunch on a corner of the Smith Campus.
Next we walked into down to NoHo and first spent some time in an
eclectic local store called Faces. After perusing their fun range of
toys, clothing, books, and posters we headed across the street to
Thorns Market, a small indoor collection of stores. While half of the
kids explored the Market I took the other half to a local music
supplies store and an Apple store. After regrouping in Thorns we got
back on the bus and head east towards Amherst.
15 minutes later we were at the Hadley Mall where we bought our tickets
to Sydney White and then broke up for an hour of exploring the mall.
After regrouping we saw the movie (Fun! Didn’t like it! Loved
it! Said the kids) and then spent another half our in the mall. We left
the mall a little before 7 and drove the short distance to The Hangar
where we picked up our very large amount of boneless wings. We ate them
on the spot outside the The Hangar on a picnic bench. Full gorged with
chicken we got back on the bus and drove for 20 minutes back to The
Farm.
At The Farm the kids settled in
and after another round of ice cream we
went to bed around 9.
On Sunday morning everyone was up around 8am and at 8:45 they were
outside moving cord wood for my father. Of course, I had to take lots
of pictures and videos instead of moving wood myself. ;) After 30
minutes of pulling large branches and logs around we headed inside and
devoured a very large breakfast of pancakes and homemade maple syrup
courtesy of Caleb and my father.
Next we piled into the van and drove about a mile down the road to hike
Rattlesnake Gutter, a road that was closed 5 years ago. Half a mile up
the road we got to the rock formation that the road is known for and
had a fun half hour of climbing all over the boulders. We hiked another
half mile down the road to the beginning of the large gully and then
turned back and headed back to The Farm to pick up all our stuff.
After resting for a little bit
at The Farm we said goodbye to my family
got on the road going west towards the Butterfly garden. On the way we
made an unscheduled stop at Mt. Sugerloaf where we got to see a
wonderful view of the entire Pioneer Valley. We ate lunch on top of the
mountain, soaked in the views, and then drove another 10 mins to the
Butterfly gardens. After paying the entrance fee and examining the
information exhibit in the lobby, we went into the main
area…. and into a world full of butterflies! The were
everywhere! The place was full of lush vegetation and other animals
– a bird, lots of small foul and some caged lizards. The
whole place was gorgeous and very surreal. After a solid 45 minutes of
flittering with the butterflies, we got back on the bus and onto 91 and
headed north. After a quick stop to gas up in Brattleboro, we zoomed
north and arrived back on campus a little after 5pm.
Thanks for such a great trip everyone!

Advisory Potluck - 9/6/07
Written by Josh Seamon
Thursday, 06 September 2007
Larger versions of this
image are available: big
and REALLY
big.
All of the pictures I took at tonight's potluck are online right
here.
My advisees and a whole
bunch of their parents came together tonight for our first (or many)
advisory potlucks.
Everything got going at just before 6pm with the arrival of Max,
Adriene, and Sam. Soon after everyone else arrived. The kids crammed
into my living room while the parents grouped around the table in the
dining room. We watched a few slide shows of my photos and after
spreading out all the food and waiting for a few last minute arrivals,
we ate lots of great food.
Nex we headed outside for games. First I taught the whole group
(parents included!) the wonderful game of WA! Next we played a couple
rounds of look-up-look-down and took some group photos. Then it was
time for sock wrestling, probably the highlight of the night.
We then made our way back inside for ice cream, cake, and whipped
cream. Soon after downing a large amount of sugar, it was time for
everyone to hit the road.
Next up.... Western, MA!

What I need each of you to do is
a confirmation that you'll be able to make it along with approximately how many people
you'll be bringing with you. (I need to start collecting
chairs.)
Other updates:
1) I posted some pictures from yesterday's chapel right
here.
A big congratulations goes out to Ashley and Frannie for being the
first people in their entire class to do a live announcement!

Amherst will be Friday
through Sunday, 9/21-23. Please email me a confirmation

My Advisory - Day 1

Mr. Seamon's Advisory - Day 1
All of 11 of my advisees met for the first time today! We had a great
time talking, walking around, and enjoying the glorious weather.
Pictures of our time together today are online in the gallery right
here.
Later in the evening I met with a bunch of my advisees' parents. We
discussed my role as advisor and what to expect in the upcoming year. I
also handed out student handbooks.
One thing I am big on is advisory events. There are a couple I would
like to hold in the next few weeks. I would like all of us (advisees
and their families) to have a potluck dinner. I would also like to
arrange a weekend trip to western MA.
I would like to hold our advisory potluck next Thursday (9/6) from 6 to 8pm
at my apartment, which is located at 222
Summer St. Everyone should plan on brining a dinner item. If
you'd like to bring a dessert item, let me know. Please let
me know if you're not going to be able to attend.
I would like to head down to Western,
MA on the weekend of 9/22-23. We'd leave in the early
evening on Friday, 9/21 and return in the early afternoon on Sunday,
9/23. We'll stay at my parents' house in Leverett, MA on Friday and
Saturday night. The tentative plan is to have a great dinner at my
parents' house on Friday night and head out for a full day of
activities on Saturday: Mini-Golf, Movies, the best wings in the world,
a movie, and.. ? We'd head back to STJ after a solid breakfast on
Sunday morning. The overall cost of the trip will be around $25 at the
most. More information on this trip will be sent out soon.
I will be sending out advisory updates via a gmail group. If you're not
getting the group emails, please let
me know.
